We all like to think we can have whatever we want. We can offer up prayers or manifest a something or someone into existence. We can force Our Future to bend to Our Will. Life would be so perfect — if only WE ran the world.
And to an extent — we can. Our energy and the vibe we send out is an echo. What we put out will come back to us. Never quite as we expect it, of course, because The Universe is nothing if not The Greatest Comedienne Ever. Many times, however, we have to adjust the sails on our journey and face the truth.
What we have been doing/wishing for/working at is not meant to be. Like the disappointed children we are prone to be — we don’t see the larger view. And we run the gamut of emotions associated with an adult-sized temper tantrum.
Instead of Listening.
Every spiritual practice in the world speaks to us and guides us in this situation. But we shut our ears to the wisdom offered.
One of my favorite quotes is rather obscure:
“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need.” — Tao Te Ching
It reminds us to evolve. To let ‘The No’ stand. To be okay with The Path which leads away from where you thought you were heading. To leave the struggle and just Be.
The Dali Lama also reminds us:
“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.”
We can only see this with clear vision as we look back in the rear view mirror — long after the moment has passed. As we experience the frustration of ‘The No’ in the moment and adjust our dreams/hopes/desires around its limitations we certainly don’t count it as a blessing.
Moments, days, months, years, even decades, later — we mine The Gift The Universe provided for us by telling us ‘No — this is not for you’. Slowly The Wisdom will come to us as the hard U-turn we were forced to make to take The Road Less Traveled led us to The Place. A Place we would never have discovered on our own — without some strategically placed ‘Nos’ in Our Lives.
So this is The Challenge. To walk Our Path with certainty — but also to be open to those course changes without angst or fear. To understand The Universe guides us and encourages us but She also will protect us and re-direct us to Our Place.
Many of those times the protection and direction include the word ‘No’.
No — this is not for you. No — this is not the time. No — you are not to experience this. No — you are not done with this lesson. No — you will still need to carry this burden. No — accept this as the complete sentence it is, you will understand the why later. NO.
And be at peace with ‘The No’.
