When I was in the OR - my surgeons research attempts were focused on trying to "build" a pancreas on a matrix with stem cells. As far as I know - they were not successful. However, the heart/lung transplant docs managed to come up with a perfusion machine that can keep lungs viable way past their usual 4 hour window.
