The Universe has been reminding me lately about this state of being.

Our One-ness with each other.

Lessons from Her usually come in the form of pointing out the places you are most vulnerable. The buttons, if you will, we all carry around with us in our psyches.

Those buttons get pushed. Even when you smugly and resolutely are committed to non-reaction — you find yourself going to dark places.

That’s the ‘bad news’ — in a way. The ‘good news’ is we will always be given insights and tools to help us heal those places.

In Pema Chodron’s new book, “Welcoming The Unwelcome”, she speaks eloquently about suffering. All. The. Suffering. She encourages us to face our suffering, embrace it, and connect to all the other beings who suffer in the same manner. Use our suffering to unite us and open us rather than to pull us back into ourselves and isolate.

And it does help.

Imagine if you will on a smaller scale of suffering — you have had a piece on Medium turned away from a publication. Your ego is bruised, your confidence a bit shaken, you aren’t sure your voice is as steady as it was yesterday when you submitted the piece. But then, you sit and take all of your doubts and fears and pour them into the cauldron of suffering. You realize there are thousands of us standing there with you. Side by side, feeling the very same thing. United in our emotions.

Makes it better, doesn’t it?

On a larger scale, we witness Human suffering we, as individuals, cannot relieve. We cannot take children out of cages. We cannot stop wars. We cannot save every patient. But we also can stay. We can witness their suffering. We can bear it with them. And we can do what we can, with what we have, where we are by staying open to those feelings. By always staying in touch with our suffering and the suffering of others.

We can be with them in their suffering and honor their Humanity. By holding ourselves in One-ness with the Humans we encounter.

The past couple of weeks I have been forgetting The One-ness. And the suffering of others. I have taken too much too personally — and that is the beginning of our own suffering.

Thankfully — The Universe has my back and led me to this wonderful book and some posts here on Medium to remind me that the duality of Life on Planet Earth is just a passing phase. Our true essence is something much deeper.

If you are looking for a good read, I highly recommend “Welcoming The Unwelcome”. Her wisdom is mana for the chaos of Life.

Namaste.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” — Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
