The best part of getting older is realizing there is stuff out there I no longer have to participate in. This stuff, these various activities, no longer serve me. Even though they are lovingly embraced by society as a whole, I can tap out.

Just this week alone, I uncovered several of these activities.

Pilates

I went to my first pilates class this morning. I have been doing yoga for over 25 years and thought perhaps throwing in some pilates might help me overcome that ever-expanding waistline issue I’ve been facing as I age. It was brutal. After the first 19 minutes, I began literally counting the minutes left until class ended. I modified many of the exercises rather than push myself to unreasonable limits. Sweat dripped off me and onto my mat in spite of the fan blowing full force over my head.

When I got home, I remembered that I didn’t have to do that anymore. I didn’t have to endure heat and discomfort just to move my body and be healthy. I didn’t need to force myself into impossible shapes. I could just stay home, in my air-conditioned house, and enjoy my gentle flow yoga classes in my yoga room.

Going out

Since I retired, I don’t really party all that much anymore. I was tempted a bit last weekend…
