I saw that statement on a FB meme recently and it made me laugh out loud.
Because so damn true.
The wisdom and truth in any culture is held by the old women. Think about it.
Who knows all the secrets in your family? Where all the bodies are buried? Who knows all the back stories on all the aunts, uncles, cousins, and great grand everyones in your family tree? All the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Who is the best cook in your family? Whose recipes is everyone still looking for generations after they have been laid to rest? (People in my family are still trying to reproduce my Aunt Blanche’s sugar cookie recipe. She took that to her grave with her).
Who stands up and calls bullshit when no one else dares to? Who is not afraid to buck social graces? To embrass or be an embrassment if it gets the point across or the truth out? Who does not “do” guilt? Or shame? Or regret?
Who owns the home that is always called ‘home’? The ‘home’ you go back to for all the ‘holy’-days of celebrations? The ‘home’ which is synonymous with the notion of sanctuary?
Whose word is law in your mind? Whose voice is it you hear when you are faced with a decision? A moral dilemma?
Who can grow anything? Who can heal anything? Who do you call for advice when your life is coming apart? Who knows the answers before you ask the questions?
The Crone is the wise woman in your life. She might be your grandmother, or your Great Aunt. She might be your Mother. Or she might simply be your own voice — awakened after decades of dormancy.
Whoever she might be, she deserves your respect. She has seen some shit go down in her day. She knows the path because she has walked it and fallen more than once. She can teach you how to be a better human because she is a better human.
Embrace her. Listen to her. Not only is she wise, she’s as badass as they come. She has learned All. The. Things.
Plus — Crones have out lived Fear. And they know it. How wonderful and dangerous is that?
