I just paroused around what I’m going to refer to as ‘The Alternate Fake’ Medium website.
It is shallow. A shadow. A negative. A poor reflection of a real image. It’s really sad.
You can immediately tell what posts are written by the four or five ‘authors’ on the site and which posts were written by people who have some writing skill and whose work was hijacked.
At first I was quite horrified that people would be so brass and steal other people’s stuff like that. Plagiarism, copy write infringement, etc — All. The. Things.
But then I realized what a Mickey Mouse kind of operation that website really was. It looks like it’s been around a few months — I saw posts going back to December, but even though I searched — I only found one single post prior to that date. The responses — claps, likes, looks — or whatever they are to each article number in the tens. For everything.
I’m not sure how many ‘hits’ that thing gets, but I bet right now — more Medium authors are looking at it trying to find their stories than actual people reading for information or pleasure.
And while it is important to follow up if one of your pieces have been pilfered— my initial outrage has turned to pity for the people who have to arrange their lives such.
anna breslin has posted a piece with excellent advice on the website and concise instructions on how to exert your rights as the copywriter. I’ve included her piece at the bottom of this post.
In my time on the website, I did find articles from White Feather and Julia E Hubbel which I know I have read only just this week. They didn’t even bother to change the titles or the art. Lazy Plagiarists at that!
Remember always, in the end, people get back exactly what they put out into The Universe — times three. It’s the Rule Of Threes. And it’s as close to The Golden Rule as witches have. Knowing that is enough for me to be satisfied that Karma will see to these folks.
And as always — She is creative and timely in her justice. So — I’m extending my sympathy to them in advance.
