In Flight

On my recent flight to Florida, I sat in front of a family.

At first, the joking around and louder than normal voices were a bit unsettling but then I listened.

It was apparent the teenage son had not flown before. And Dad — in his Dad way — was telling Bad Dad jokes about take-off and flying to redirect his son into a different level of emotional state. Namely embarrassment and annoyance at his old man.

A much more comfortable and familiar place for a teenager to inhabit.

Mom chimes in with laughter and bits of comfort. Nothing crossed the line into ridicule. In fact, just the opposite. It was nearly educational- yet humorous.

I’m thinking Dad was a Geek. And I began to love this loud, boisterous group of Humans just behind me.

As we took off — my very favorite part — I listened in. Dad built the anticipation for his son until yep — there it was. Liftoff.

We all felt it. The kid let out a little gasp. I swear even the most seasoned travelers among us couldn’t help but smile.

To see an experience through the eyes of a novice. To let Life be a wonder and a surprise every time. To live as if everything is a new experience.

When did we lose this?

Namaste.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”— Albert Einstein
