I’m a nurse — as well. You did an excellent job of capturing the truly wretched emotions caregivers feel as bystanders to the life and death ordeals of patients. We intervene when we can and learn to let go when we have tragic out comes. We learn to look at our patients and say “This is not my pain” so we can survive when we do have our own. Our training teaches us to build the walls that keep Real Us away from our patients and it works about 90% of the time. But — there’s always a few that get past the shields. And they feel a lot like this. They change your heart forever. Thank you — it’s a great fiction — not fiction tale. 🙏🏻
