I once received a bill from my lab for the full amount of my bloodwork. When I called them to find out why my insurance didn't cover it - they advised me to contact my insurer. When I called my insurer - I was told the lab needed to resubmit the claim because they failed to provide all the information necessary to receive payment. I was NOT liable. The insurance rep got me on the line WITH the lab & was referred to another department - not customer service - but the one that actually spoke INSURANCE. They would resubmit the bill to insurance. My insurance rep was horrified that the lab did not plan to follow up with me once the bill was paid. I was just told to contact them again if I got another statement in the coming months. So far so good. But many people - especially patients who don't know the system very well - just assume mistakes don't happen & this amount must apply to a deductible or something. This is not the first time in my life I've gotten bills for services that were covered by my insurance OR by bogus charges all together. Great piece with heaps of good information. You'll find it shared on The Crow's Feet Twitter feed next week!
