I had a negative excisional biopsy of a lump a few decades ago. The relief I felt when it was removed was worth every single moment of anxiety from the discovery to the surgery to the pathology results. When I found it all I wanted was to get rid of the thing. It was benign - thankfully. But having lived with the experience of having a lump, then a lumpectomy - I get annual mammograms & have followed up on any abnormal results. I've lost too many friends to breast cancer - back in the days when mammograms were a new expensive diagnostic tool & insurance companies didn't like to pay for screening. Now that they're free - I rejoice. My mother died a horrible death from cancer (lung) and she never smoked. And I want to live a while longer. But then exposure to the radiation of a mammogram doesn't worry me. As an OR nurse, I wore lead & badges on a regular because I worked with C-arms & fluoro equipment quite a bit. It's far more likely any cancer I might get from radiation came from my career.
