I grew up in this same situation. My uncles taught their younger siblings English when they started school. None of them had an accent, but only Italian was spoken in my grandmother's home. As a result of their trauma - none of my mother's siblings taught their American kids Italian. We did know - capisce - because when my mother was well & truly pissed - that word was the punctuation at the end of her command. We also learned several swear words. LOL
