Member-only story
I have come to realize something this week. I like writing. I really, really like it. I’m not so experienced to actually be good at it. But the truth we often forget is we don’t have to be great or even good at a something to enjoy it.
Our society, particularly in America, only wants us to be winners. There are no great rewards for doing a thing with mediocre results — even if you enjoyed the hell out of doing it. Do you want to paint? Picassos only need apply. How about any kind of sport? We can never play for ‘fun’ — we must ALWAYS seek to win. Let’s say you decide not to climb the corporate ladder — can you still be counted as a good person if you just keep showing up and doing your job? Even without the promotions?
If you can’t excel at a thing — don’t even bother.
One of the best decisions I ever made was to retire at age 61. That’s pretty young in the scheme of things, considering it will be years before I even qualify for my social security benefits. But I decided to trade my time for money and found out I didn’t really need all that much to maintain my lifestyle.
And — I do what I like. Every. Single. Moment. Of. Every. Single. Day.
So I’m writing some. Not for recognition, or financial gain. Not even to share my thoughts and beliefs. I’m writing because it’s something I like to do. And Life is way too short to be spending your time doing shit you hate.
Even if you’re not particularly great at it.
Namaste.
