I agree completely. But my point is — our time is not so unique in history. The Inquisition, for example. Now there’s an example of a lot of people in power saying really Dumb Shit that not only got people killed — but made them long for death. And there’s that part where someone, somewhere decided witches float — so thousands of women were drowned, or crushed, or burned, or hanged — as whatever Dumb Shit spoken was put out into the world and practiced.

And war. If that isn’t the Dumbest Shit anyone, anywhere has ever spoken out loud — I don’t know what is.

Are we dumber than previous generations for giving so much credence to the Dumb Shit our people utter? Maybe. But the history of humanity is fraught with people saying Dumb Shit. And yes, even Dumb Shit that got a lot of people killed dead.

Our generation — our time — well, we aren’t as special as we’d like to believe.

And yes, COVID is awful. But so is a lot of other stuff out there equally as full of people speaking Dumb Shit about it. Reproductive rights, gun violence, political corruption, Russian aggression. The list is vast but they all have one thing in common.
