I recently finished reading It’s Not Your Money by Tosha Silver. In the first chapter, week 1 of her spiritually-based financial makeover — she asks her readers to recite a prayer. It’s no accident that smack dab in the middle of the prayer is a request that we allow ourselves to feel worthy. She goes one step further and encourages us to change into beings who fully love, forgive, and accept ourselves.
And let me tell you how very difficult that change is.
We go through our lives with an internal set of rules handed down to us by every single authority figure we ever encountered. The Good Girl Rules, The Good Daughter Rules, The Good Student Rules, The Good Driver Rules, The Good Wife & Mother Rules, The Good Employee Rules — the list is endless. And of course, not a single one of us ever gets them all right — all of the time.
It’s insanity to expect that. We certainly don’t expect the Humans in our lives to get all their rules right — all of the time. And yet — we will hold ourselves to this impossible standard even as we offer forgiveness to those around us for their missteps.
Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why are we programmed to NOT love, forgive, and accept ourselves?
