Burning The Fucking Bridge

Everyone tells you that you shouldn’t. Who knows when you might need a network, a reference, a cup of sugar…a whatever? Humans are pack animals. We need a society/a group/a pack.

But — do you actually need the people/thing on the other side of the bridge you just managed to pull yourself across?

Think about it.

Think about those first few shaky steps when you found your courage to begin to walk across the divide towards a new something. You walked through whatever winds blew on that bridge to get on the other side of it. A lot of those journeys take courage, determination, and more than a fair amount of not looking back or down. Why would you ever cross that chasm again?

There you stand now. On terra firma. You made it across the canyon to the dream you held to the other side. WELL DONE!

Stand up tall. And go ahead — burn that damn bridge. You are never going back. You fought long and hard to get over here. There is nothing for you over there. To even ponder revisiting it stirs up emotions you laid to rest when you laid your feet on the path to your future. There is no good which comes of keeping an escape route to your past.

The parable of Lot’s Wife exists in the Bible to remind us — longing for what is gone can turn our Life to ash or something which closely resembles it. Life is lived in the present moment. Not looking back over our shoulders longing for a toxic past we left behind.

The people and things which are meant for you will always be with you. In my life, I have learned to love the sound of my feet walking away from those things not meant for me.

Friendships, jobs, relationships, dreams — I have learned the art of striking the match. I have learned the peace of letting go of what needs to go and the grace of watching the space fill with all the blessings which come in their place. I have let the burning of many bridges warm my heart and awaken my soul.

Never be afraid to burn that fucking bridge. The light of the blaze illuminates the truth, the warmth of the flame melts your heart, and the entire process sets you free.

Namaste.
