My foray into the world of Democratic politics

Recently, I volunteered for a literature prep event with my county Democratic committee. For a few hours, I sat around at table with other like-minded individuals and bonded as we stapled and labeled various materials to be handed out by the foot soldiers of politics — the canvassors.

In fact, the event was so well attended — the organizer came back and requested we sign up for a specific time slot so as to distribute us more evenly throughout the day.

I live in North Carolina. You may already know this if you’ve read any amount of my work. North Carolina is one of several Battleground States. The Federal government thinks we identify as Red. However, I’ve always thought of us as more Purple. You see, for as long as I’ve lived here — we’ve only put a Republican in the Governor’s Mansion once. Just one time in nearly 30 years. And let me tell you, no one let that man serve for a second term.

We tend to elect Democrats to our state and local governments. And we send the GOP to D.C. My thought was always that we did that to get rid of them for a time. That way they wouldn’t be interfering with our day-to-day existence. In fact, in my precinct, there are no GOP candidates even running against the Democrats seeking office in the state senate and house elections. There are a…
