Evening at my house. Blues fill the air. Leonard Cohen, Amos Lee, Etta James, Samantha Fish and a few other favorites rotate through Pandora on shuffle. The old and the new coexist side by side in my eclectic music library.
I light the black candles. They absorb negative energy and offer a shell of protection around the sanctuary I’m creating.
This is my nightly ritual as I wind down and settle my brain reaching for The Peace before I sleep. Emptying my mind of the days events, filling it with music and clearing out from my being the toxic energy others have poured upon me.
Since I’ve been doing this I’ve been sleeping better at night and haven’t been plagued with nightmares. Occassionally one will still slip through, but mostly my dreams are peaceful ramblings of my mind. A restful, safe haven for my subconsciousness to sink into and recoperate.
Dr. Mario Martinez tells us in ‘The Mind Body Code’ ritual is one of the ‘secrets’ which helps keep us alive and living a healthy life for a long time. A very long time. People who live into their 100’s consistently practice some sort of daily ritual. It’s not the shot of bourbon at night, or stogie per se, — it’s the fact there is a ‘something’ daily. Maybe it’s tea every afternoon. Or a cup of coffee at 8 am sharp over the paper. Perhaps it’s walking to the mailbox with the dog at 6 am. Pick a ritual. Some one thing that brings you peace. That lets you take a moment to settle your brain. Your soul.
And then — do it. Every. Damn. Day.
Like turning on the blues and lighting some black candles every night.
Research says those few minutes every day might very well add decades to your life.
