Before Vatican II — if you were female you had to cover your head in church. I still remember my mother bobby pinning a paper tissue to my head to go to mass because I left my little lace head covering at home. She always kept both in her purse for just such occassions. Every once in a while she’d pop into church on the way home from shopping to light a candle and we’d both sport tissues on our heads.
It’s true. I can’t make this stuff up.
