I didn’t begin this story as a series, however, The Pirate/Owl and The Witch/Wolf keep making appearances around here with things to share.
Here is their continuing story — all in one place. More or less in some kind of cosmic order — not in the order I wrote it, however, because The Universe has a great sense of humor.
It’s Thursday. I’ve been assigned to OR 3 with one of my favorite scrub techs. It will be a tough day and I’m relieved to have her.
Thursday in my OR is the day our OB/GYN service has block time to schedule D&Es. To the non-medical personnel out there — abortions. Room 3 is their room. I’m their circulating nurse for the duration.
On this Thursday — we have four cases scheduled and a ‘hold’ spot for the end of the day in case one of their partners sees someone in clinic and there is an emergency. …
As a former OR nurse, I just don’t see what the big deal is. I worked 40+ hours a week, in a mask. For most of my nursing career. With asthma.
It’s not like anyone is taking away our guns. Goddess Forbid!
I know for a fact masks work to prevent the transmission of our germs from one being to another. That’s why we wear them in operating rooms. Everywhere. Globally. Because they work.
We wear masks to protect our patients. For many days before any symptoms emerge— we are all carriers. Of anything we might ‘catch’. From the flu…
It’s not about vengeance after all
When I started looking deeper into the philosophies behind my yoga and meditation practice, I learned about Karma. The real and true meaning of the energy.
Karma is defined by Dictonary.com as:
the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. Destiny or fate, following as effect from cause.
Karma can be immediate or take a long time to percolate. However, it is always neutral — just as destiny is neither good nor evil. It simply is. Karma doesn’t seek justice on…
In all the meditation classes I’ve taken and meditation seminars I’ve sat through, A Beginner’s Mind was always stressed. It applies not just to our relationship with our cushion but with every relationship, everywhere.
A Beginner’s Mind exists in all of us when we take the first step on a journey. The spark of interest in a Bright & Shiny something or someone. We are happy to learn and explore the different terrain. We are stimulated and All. The. Feel. Good. Chemicals flood our nervous system.
Right up until it doesn’t.
Most Humans have a pretty short attention span when…
About two months ago I started writing nearly every day. I was mostly true to the informal commitment I made and I think my sentence structure has improved with practice.
This is the 61st piece I’m posting here on Medium.
It has been easier than I thought to find a topic to write about. Even going so far as to write about writing. My challenge has been to keep the shadows out, to remain a positive force in the world. It was the deal we made, The Universe and I, it must be about the light.
Here are some of the stories I’ve written about Love.
Love lost & Love found. Enjoy!

“I need an Otis elevator! STAT!” The surgeon’s voice pierced the room and rose above the music.
The circulating nurse turned to the medical student and gave him very specific instructions about where in central sterile distributing to go to request the instrument the surgeon was screaming for.
After the medical student left on his quest, quiet laughter crept through the room.
It worked every time. Every. Single. Time.
The surgeon smiled behind his mask — maybe next time he’ll demand Elbow Grease to pack a wound. …
I just got back from a few days at the beach with my family. Both daughters, one son-in-law, and All The Magical Creatures.
My favorite thing to do while I’m at the beach is to sit on the deck and drink my morning coffee while watching the ocean. The sound of the surf is incredibly calming to my soul and just being within view of the ocean’s power helps me gain perspective on All. The. Things.
This trip found me in the company of a cluster of dragonflies. They would greet me every time I was on the deck. …
